A federal judge refused Tuesday to bar prosecutors from using sealed evidence in the racketeering trial of Louisiana Gov. Edwin W. Edwards and seven others.

News reports have said that the evidence concerns Edwards’ gambling debts. However, no one connected with the case has confirmed it. U.S. District Judge Marcel Livaudais, ruling on a series of motions, refused also to order a separate trial for any of Edwards’ co-defendants, leaving all eight scheduled for trial on Sept. 17.
