Defending champion John McEnroe shook off his first day troubles to beat Canadian Martin Wostenholme, 6-0, 7-6, 6-1, today to reach the third round of the U.S. Open. In the women’s division of tennis play, No. 3 seed Hana Mandlikova, twice the runner-up in the Open, registered a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Britain’s Annabel Croft.
