A fund set up more than a year ago to aid the survivors of the 1984 massacre of 21 people at a McDonald’s restaurant was granted tax-exempt status today.

Dan Greenblat, a spokesman for Rep. Bill Lowery (R-San Diego), said the Internal Revenue Service and the San Ysidro Family Survivors Fund have reached an agreement on the distribution of the fund that satisfies IRS requirements. Until today’s ruling, recipients of money from the $1.4-million fund faced the prospect of handing over as much as one-third of it in taxes.
