Mexico’s $1 Fares

Aeromexico is giving the airline away. They’ll fly you to 19 scattered destinations for a buck a flight. There’s a catch, of course: You must pay the regular air fare between here and Mexico. After this, it’s dollar days. The airline offers the $1 flights to Cozumel, Mazatlan, Chetumal, Morelia, Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta, Uruapan, Villahermosa, Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Cancun, Guadalajara, La Paz, Loreto, San Jose del Cabo, Manzanillo, Merida, Mexico City, Acapulco. No advance purchase necessary. No limit on the number of flights. Only one restriction: You must figure your itinerary at the time you purchase your ticket in the United States. From LAX, Aeromexico flies direct to La Paz, Los Cabos, Guadalajara, Cancun, Loreto, Manzanillo, Merida, Mexico City, Monterrey. Details by dialing toll-free (800) AEROMEX.

Insurance by Phone

Speaking of Mexico, a San Ysidro insurance broker has introduced a phone-a-policy service for motorists crossing the border. Instant insurance by dialing a toll-free number. Here’s how it works: First you apply for an identification card with the insurance company. After this, give your I.D. number when calling the office and a policy number will be issued immediately. (Motorists in Mexico must be insured or else be able to prove financial responsibility in case of an accident. That’s the law.) Write to Oscar Padilla Insurance Services, 120 Willow Road, San Ysidro, Calif. 92073.

Golden Spike’s train will include an observation dome/lounge car. Same people are doing a four-day trip to the Napa Valley (Sept. 26-29) for $395. Contact Golden Spike, P.O. Box 3429, Fullerton, Calif. 92634, or telephone (714) 680-5090.

Foreign Currency

Deak-Perera, the big money changer, figures the dollar has peaked. As a hedge against falling values, DP suggests travelers buy foreign currency now for trips they’re planning to take. An executive told us that Deak-Perera is anticipating “a gradual but extended decline in the dollar’s buying power.” To help customers earn interest on their purchases, Deak-Perera will place the funds in an interest-bearing account until the travelers are ready to take their trips. Contact Deak-Perera, 677 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles 90017.
