Karpov, Kasparov Meet Again; First Game Adjourned

The first game in the second round of the world chess championship between titlist Anatoly Karpov and challenger Gary Kasparov was adjourned Tuesday when Kasparov, playing white, sealed his 42nd move.

Kasparov was one pawn ahead of the champion, and experts watching the game said the challenger had a winning position if he continues correctly when play resumes today.

The first round between the two Soviet grandmasters was stopped in February by the president of the World Chess Federation, Florencio Campomanes of the Philippines, after a record-shattering 5 1/2 months of play.

Karpov was then leading 5-3, but Kasparov had taken the two final games.
