Nursery Seeks Alumni for Anniversary

September is a big month for most organizations. After the summer respite, there’s always a flurry of activity.

Pasadena Day Nursery for Child Development celebrates its 75th anniversary Sept. 15. According to architect Miller Fong, chairman of the birthday committee, the nursery has launched a search for alumni of its preschool, the oldest child-care center in Southern California. Organizers are hoping to hear from people in their 70s who attended the nursery.

Torrance Memorial Hospital Medical Center, the oldest health-care facility in the South Bay/Palos Verdes Peninsula communities, celebrates its 60th anniversary Friday with an “Evening of Music” at the Torrance Marriott Hotel.

Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager, accompanied by a 27-piece orchestra, headline the gala. Carmela Welte is expecting a sell-out crowd of 700 for dinner, dancing and auction. Peninsula medical and community leaders call this a must.

The Los Angeles Opera Theater will benefit from the grand opening of Bonwit Teller’s new fur salon Sept. 27. Opera star Giorgio Tozzi hosts the event. Kathryn Grayson (“Show Boat”) will be among the celebrity opera buffs modeling furs, along with Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes (“Days of Our Lives”), Carla Borelli and Bo Svenson.

Susan George and Simon MacCorkindale will emcee the show. Tickets are $50.

The city’s resident producing opera company opened its 1985-86 season at the newly restored Wiltern Theatre in July with a production of “Don Giovanni.” Upcoming is the West Coast premiere of Alban Berg’s “Lulu,” Oct. 22-26, and “Cavalleria Rusticana” and “I Pagliacci,” starring Jon Vickers, in March.

Celebrities, including several members of the SHARE organization, will model in “Fall Into Fashion ‘85,” Sept. 14 at the Westin Bonaventure.

The event is hosted by the Exceptional Children’s Foundation recreational program support group EXTRA (Expanding Therapeutic Recreational Activities). Proceeds will be used to purchase equipment for summer camps for the developmentally disabled.

Fashion and wardrobe rejuvenation are also on the mind of the San Marino Area Auxiliary of Five Acres, which presents a fashion show and luncheon Sept. 19 at the Huntington Sheraton Hotel in Pasadena. “Fashion Reflections” is a double-header. June Van Dyke will present the Edith Head collection and Nanci Brooks of Bonwit Teller will show current designer fashions.

Mrs. James L. Browne is benefit chairman, with a lot of help from Mmes. Edward W. Peschke, Charles T. Martin, McDowell Keeler, Fred H. Sahhar, H. Whittemore Adams, Alan Johnson, Fitzgerald Speedy, Patrick B. Matthews, Richard H. Forster, Harry G. Johansing, Roy T. Sheehey and E. M. Ratliff.

The auxiliary supports the tutorial program at Five Acres, a home for abused children, including the funding of an early-education specialist.

Concert pianist Mona Golabek, winner of the 1980 Avery Fisher Award, highlights the Friends of Julia Ann Singer annual luncheon Sept. 12 in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton.

Mrs. Aaron Eshman, luncheon chairman, says proceeds will benefit emotionally troubled children from ages 3 to 12. Mrs. Irving Ball is co-chairman. Assisting are Mmes. Sam Schultz, Rees Roston, Theodore Zolla, Robert Yudelson, Maurice Schwarz, Sidney Lushing, Ben Lichtenfeld and Manuel Resnick.

Fay Kozberg, president, notes Friends has supported the Julia Ann Singer Center, an out-patient treatment facility, for 30 years.

Displaced homemakers and support groups for divorced women and those with eating disorders and health problems all will benefit from Women Helping Women’s fund-raising auction Saturday at the National Council of Jewish Women, 543 N. Fairfax Blvd.

Actress Patty Duke heads the committee, hoping to raise $25,000. Involved, too, in the benefit are L.A.D.I.E.S. (Life After Divorce Is Eventually Sane), women who’ve been divorced from celebrities. Patti MacLeod, a founding member, but now remarried to actor Gavin MacLeod, is a leader.

The Betty Clooney Foundation for the Brain Injured has kicked off its membership drive. Honorary co-chairmen are Rosemary Clooney and her brother, KNBC anchorman Nick Clooney. The foundation was founded in 1983 in memory of their sister.

Nancy Wolpa, executive director of the Hope Foundation Inc., a nonprofit community organization maintaining free support programs for cancer patients and their families, has booked the Beverly Hills Hotel Crystal Room for a $40-per-person brunch and fashion show.

The Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Guild is hosting high tea Sept. 14 to present the Silver Rose Debutantes at the Piru Mansion in Ventura County.
