Raymond O. Lewis, 84; Former Vice President of UMW
Raymond O. Lewis, former United Mine Workers vice president and the younger brother of coal miners’ leader John L. Lewis, has died in Florida at the age of 84, UMW officials said Wednesday.
Lewis, who served as vice president of the international union and led the Charleston-based UMW District 17, the largest of the union’s 21 districts, died Monday in Fort Myers, Fla., where he had lived since retiring in 1965.
Lewis joined the UMW in Illinois in 1917, three years before his brother took control of the union that John L. Lewis ran for the next 40 years. John Lewis died in 1969.
