Iran’s supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, on Wednesday inaugurated President Ali Khamenei for a second four-year term in office and added a warning.

The 84-year-old leader, looking well, called Khamenei a “respected scholar, . . . one who has served Islam sincerely.” Then he added: “But his appointment is only valid as long as he abides by Islam and supports the deprived. Powerful people only want more power.”

Khomeini sat on a green-painted concrete platform while his son, Ahmed, read the appointment decree to officials and ambassadors.
