The Irvine Co. has made a new $500,000 “challenge” grant to the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, the company’s president, Thomas Nielsen, announced.

Under the grant’s 2-to-1 matching terms, Center campaigners need to raise $1.5 million from other sources to receive the $500,000 from the Irvine Co.

The Center met the same matching requirements under a previous Irvine Co. grant. In 1983-84, the Center raised $3 million in order to obtain a $1-million Irvine Co. contribution.

In 1983, the Irvine Co.’s board chairman, Donald Bren, pledged up to $250,000 for underwriting programming costs during the opening week for the Center’s 3,000-seat multipurpose theater, which is scheduled to debut in the fall of 1986.

To date, $67.5 million has been raised, including $48.5 million for construction and $19 million for an operating endowent fund.
