Longshot Goldspell Goes Wide to Win Del Mar Feature

Share

Goldspell, the fourth choice of a crowd of 14,625, won Friday’s Torrey Pines Stakes, a $50,000-added race for 3-year-old fillies, at Del Mar.

Goldspell hardly ran like a longshot, however. She was positioned safely in second place on the rail until the final turn. With some urging by jockey Rafael Meza, Goldspell went outside on the turn and drew away in the stretch. Meza, who earned his fifth stakes win of the meeting, only used the whip once.

Stakes To Win, with Gary Stevens aboard, set the early pace. Meza positioned Goldspell in second inside of Rose Cream. The three stayed that way until Goldspell challenged the leader on the turn. Folk Art made a belated run down the stretch but gained little ground and finished second.

Goldspell paid $15, $6.40 and $5.60. Folk Art, the 6-5 favorite with Laffit Pincay riding, paid $3.80 and $3.60. Lucky Roberta, with Bill Shoemaker up, paid $5 to show.
