Eighty-five whales were beached and dying on Indonesia’ resort island of Bali, the official Antara news agency reported.

Balinese villagers tried to drag the whales out to sea but they always returned, Antara said. It did not say how many had died.

The villagers buried some of the dead whales and others were taken away to be examined by fishery officials, the agency said.

A spokesman for Bali’s fisheries service said the whales, which measured between 10 and 20 feet, are rarely seen off Bali.
