Hurricane Shifts Course Away From Hawaii

Hurricane Pauline turned north Saturday and moved away from Hawaii, but a potentially stronger second hurricane could still threaten the island chain, the National Weather Service said.

Hurricane Rick was “a long way away but headed this way,” weather service spokesman Clarence Lee said.

However, the hurricane was not expected to be within 1,000 miles of the islands before Monday and there was no way to make an accurate forecast of what the storm might do in that length of time, he said.

Hurricane Pauline, which had been moving due west on a path that would have taken it just south of the islands, veered northward during the night and was expected to weaken as it passed a safe distance to the north of the island chain, forecasters said.

A hurricane watch posted Friday for Hawaii’s southernmost island of Hawaii was canceled Saturday.
