Eager Wait for Retail Crane Eggs to Hatch

The lead from your story on Bren’s La Jolla Colony (Aug. 18) brought a smile. Our 5-year-old son thought of the huge crane used in construction of Executive Plaza in the “Golden Triangle” as a crane sitting on a nest. This spring he noticed a smaller crane across the street and exclaimed, “One of the crane’s eggs has hatched.”

Much of the new growth in the triangle is commercial structures, but there are also many town-house, condominium and apartment complexes under construction or recently completed.

Daren Groth’s comments may have left an unclear picture of the housing makeup of the Triangle. While La Jolla Colony has the only single-family new-home construction in the area, there are about 8,000 (according to local real estate salespeople) single-family homes in the Golden Triangle, including those pioneered by Irvin Kahn in the early 1960s, to several hundred built by H.L. Summers and Cameo Development in the 1980s.

With only two small grocery stores serving the 5,000-acre site, residents eagerly await the hatching of crane eggs on a supermarket pad adjoining La Jolla Colony.
