Seven people were killed when their automobile was struck by an Oakland-bound Amtrak train near San Jose, authorities reported. None of the train’s 275 passengers was injured. The accident occurred when the Amtrak SP Coast Starlight traveling on Southern Pacific tracks rounded a curve at about 55 m.p.h. in the rural Coyote area, 12 miles south of San Jose, and struck the car, which had climbed onto the tracks even though there was no intersection or crossing. An SP spokesman, Andy Anderson, said the car was “wedged underneath the locomotive.” After the wreckage was cleared, the train continued its run.
