Waltrip Wins the Wrangler 400; Elliott Finishes 12th
Darrell Waltrip took the lead for the fifth and final time six laps from the finish and went on to a narrow victory over Terry Labonte in the $262,000 Wrangler 400 NASCAR Grand National stock car race at Richmond, Va.
Waltrip averaged 72.508 m.p.h. after starting in the 22nd position. He earned $35,000.
Waltrip, who came into the race trailing leader Bill Elliott by 206 points in the Winston Cup standings, gained 53 points with the win to narrow the gap to 153 points. Elliott finished 12th.
Labonte, who was one car-length behind Waltrip at the checkered flag, earned $23,850. Richard Petty was third, followed by Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd. All five were in the lead lap.
