Huntington Beach : Volunteers Are Sought for Historical Survey

Share

While the city looks for a consultant to assist in a historical survey of the downtown area, people with photographs or other historical items are encouraged to join the effort.

The Huntington Beach Historical Society and Antiquities Commission will conduct much of the study with the consultant’s help, concentrating on an area bounded by Lake, Golden West and Clay streets, and Pacific Coast Highway.

The review will be used by the city to determine the specific locations of a 300-room hotel and at least 90,000 square feet of office and commercial space to be developed in the area by Huntington Pacifica Development Co., according to Mike Adams, principal redevelopment planner.

“This would be the review to say exactly what is significant and should be preserved,” he said, adding that sites will be selected not so much on the basis of architecture but on the structure’s significance to the city’s history.

He said no such report has been conducted before. The survey will take about four more months and will require the work of 15 society volunteers. A review of Huntington Pacifica’s final design plans should come before the Planning Commission in about six months.

Those willing to help with the survey or contribute items may call the city’s redevelopment office at (714) 536-5582.
