Los Angeles County agriculture officials said they expect to thwart a possible infestation by crop-threatening Oriental fruit flies after the latest discovery in Long Beach of four more flies. “We feel we can handle the situation easily because we have a very effective lure,” said Bob Atkins, supervisor in charge of pest detection for the county’s Agriculture Department. He said bait of methyl eugenol (a sex attracter) laced with the insecticide Dibrom is being placed throughout a 10-square-mile area. In addition, a 90-square-mile area surrounding the location of this newest discovery of the insects near Palo Verde Avenue and the San Diego Freeway is being spotted with other traps.
