Italy plans to build the world’s longest suspension bridge, to link Sicily and the Italian mainland, it was disclosed Friday.

The span would be 10,800 feet long, more than double the 4,260-foot length of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York City, the longest existing suspension bridge.

Transportation Ministry spokesman Umberto Cutolo confirmed a report in the Rome newspaper Il Messaggero that quoted Transportation Minister Claudio Signorile as saying the state-run railroad and state-run highway company will sign a preliminary agreement with a consortium of construction firms by October.

The newspaper quoted Signorile as saying that the bridge would take as long as eight years to build, beginning in 1988.
