LATER, ‘APOCALYPSE’
Regarding David Crook’s “The New Front on Vietnam” (Aug. 25): “It was the only Vietnam that I wanted to know, for the movie affirmed the existence of that deep foundation of existential absurdity that, I had learned as a literature student, likes in the recesses of the modern psyche.”
Come on.
One, “Apocalypse Now” had about as much to do with the Vietnam war as the ones who made it did. It was also a pretentious piece of you know what.
Two, to have those with high draft numbers pontificate about the war is roughly equivalent to commissioning Henry James to write a war novel.
In fact, why don’t you have Tom Hayden write a piece about how he was traumatized by protesting the war, and the time he was sprayed with Agent Orange in San Francisco?
