Younger Greenup Ordered to Stand Trial

Edwin A. Greenup, whose father faces 21 counts of child molestation, was himself ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges of molesting a 3-year-old girl in a separate case.

An additional count of kidnaping was dismissed by San Fernando Municipal Judge Paul I. Metzler during the two-day preliminary hearing, during which the court heard testimony from four witnesses, including a 10-year-old girl.

In court Tuesday, Greenup, 29, a Granada Hills resident, wore a neck-high upper body brace and turned stiffly several times to smile at his sister, Stephanie Mason; his mother, Lillian Greenup, and grandmother, Harriett Greenup, who were sitting among the spectators. Greenup’s attorney, Edward L. Masry, said his client is in “constant pain” from having his neck fractured in three separate accidents.

The 10-year-old testified that Greenup approached her Aug. 15 as she played with her brothers in front of her apartment building on Roscoe Boulevard in Northridge.

Child Led Behind Complex

When she refused to go with him, the girl said, she saw Greenup take the purported victim, now 4 years old, by the hand and lead her to a laundry room in the rear of the apartments, where he dropped his shorts.

She then ran to get her father and tell him what happened, she said. Greenup was arrested on Roscoe Boulevard about an hour later, after witnesses pointed him out to police.

Metzler dismissed the kidnaping charge at the request of Greenup’s attorney, who said the movement from the front to the rear of the apartment did not constitute a kidnaping. But Deputy Dist. Atty. Alex Kessel said Tuesday he will file a charge of attempted kidnaping against Greenup.

Edwin Greenup’s father, Campbell Hugh Greenup, 57, is awaiting trial. The elder Greenup, former operator of a private Northridge elementary school, was arrested in April, 1984, and accused of molesting eight girls who were students at the school. Many of the parents of children who attended the school have rallied to his support.

Edwin Greenup’s arraignment has been set for Oct. 1 in San Fernando Superior Court.
