East German Policeman Escapes to West in Boat

WEST BERLIN —
A 34-year-old uniformed East German policeman escaped to West Berlin on Thursday in his patrol boat on Lake Havel, which marks the border between the city’s southwest suburbs and East Germany, a police spokesman said.
The border line through the lake is marked by buoys and is heavily guarded by East German patrol boats. Elsewhere, the Berlin Wall divides East and West Berlin.
