One of every five hydrants in this city was shut off during a Labor Day blaze that destroyed dozens of houses and businesses and caused damage estimated at $400 million, it was reported Sunday.

Fire Chief Kenneth Paterson said that, for the last three years, he has ordered that 136 of the city’s 680 hydrants turned off at that time to deter vandalism, the North Jersey Herald News said.
