Brazilian authorities, at the request of the United States, have arrested a Taiwanese man sought in the murder in California last year of a Chinese-American journalist who was a critic of the Taiwanese government, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The officials, who asked not to be identified, said Tung Kuei-sen was arrested in Brazil on Friday at U.S. request for extradition purposes.

Tung has been sought in the slaying of Henry Liu, 52, in Daly City last October. He was earlier reported to have been in hiding in the Philippines and Japan.

If he is extradited, he would be the only member of the three-man hit squad to be tried in the United States. Chen Chi-li, 42, leader of Taiwan’s powerful United Bamboo gang, and Wu Tun, 35, a gang member, were convicted of the slaying by a Taiwan court earlier this year. Both were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Liu, a writer for the Chinese-language San Francisco Journal, was slain last Oct. 15.

The former head of Taiwan’s military intelligence agency was convicted of initiating the killing and also was sentenced to prison.
