A National Transportation Safety Board team on Saturday discovered engine parts believed to be from the Midwest Express airplane that crashed shortly after takeoff on Sept. 6, killing all 31 persons aboard.

Team director Ed Fraser said that a fairly large piece of the compressor in the right engine of the DC-9 was found. He said it will be evaluated in Washington.

“My mission here was to look for the parts of the right engine, and I’m glad to tell you we have been able to find a piece,” he said.

An extensive search was conducted for several days after the crash, but safety board officials decided to return to Milwaukee’s Mitchell Field to look for more.
