CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines —
Gunmen burst into a house in a village 500 miles south of Manila and shot to death a newspaper columnist critical of President Ferdinand E. Marcos’ government, police said Friday. The death of Claro Chavez, 41, who wrote for the English-language Philippine Daily Tribune, brings to 13 the number of journalists killed in the Philippines this year.
