The University of Georgia will discontinue its men’s gymnastics program after the 1985-86 season, Athletic Director Vince Dooley announced today.

Dooley said the decision was made by the school’s athletic board.

Georgia is the only Southeastern Conference school that fields a men’s gymnastics team, and “the lack of conference sponsorship lessens the opportunities for participants in championships and related activities,” the announcement said.

Dooley also noted that the men’s gymnastics coach, Steven Bonham, recently resigned and that the decision will equalize the number of men’s and women’s sports at Georgia with nine each. The women’s gymnastics program will continue.

“It is always with extreme mixed emotions that you consider discontining any sport,” Dooley said.
