New York Yankee pitcher Phil Niekro, expected to try for his 300th victory again tonight, went home to Lansing, Ohio, Sunday to visit his ailing father, Phil Sr., a retired coal miner who underwent surgery Saturday, a team spokesman said.

It was uncertain whether the 46-year-old Yankee knuckleballer would go for his fourth try at No. 300 here against the Baltimore Orioles, said team spokesman Joe Safety.

Joe Niekro, Phil’s brother and teammate, previously left the team to visit their father.
