Share

The Los Angeles Environmental Quality Board will hold a hearing in the San Fernando Valley tonight on how the city can better inform the public about contamination of local ground water.

The hearing will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Sun Valley Recreation Center, 8133 Vineland Ave., Sun Valley.

Dave Kuntzman, the board’s staff assistant, said the hearing is being held to help the city develop a strategy for communicating with the public about problems with hazardous materials.

A dozen water wells in the North Hollywood area have been shut down because of unacceptable levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE), both potential carcinogens. The city Department of Water and Power has asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for $4 million from the federal Superfund to finance a ground-water cleanup.

The board is made up of five citizens appointed by Mayor Tom Bradley to advise the mayor on environmental issues.
