Anaheim : Ordinance to Prohibit Golfing in City Parks

Share

A squabble between a jogger and a golfer in a city park has resulted in a proposed ban on golfing in public parks.

About two months ago, a jogger came close to becoming the accidental target of an errant golf ball at Trident Community Center, according to Chris Jarvi, city parks, recreation and community services director.

To the displeasure of the golfer, the jogger asked him to put away his clubs. The golfer called police, researched city ordinances and said he should be allowed to play because no city code prohibited the game at parks, Jarvi said.

“It ended up being a personal grudge because the golfer wasn’t going to stop golfing and the jogger wasn’t going to stop jogging,” Jarvi said.

City Council members on Tuesday gave preliminary approval to an ordinance that prohibits hitting golf balls in public parks. The new law will reduce the potential for accidents, Jarvi said.

Once the ordinance receives final approval, it would close a loophole inadvertently left open, Jarvi said. “We’ve never meant to have golf in public parks,” Jarvi said. “It’s just much too dangerous.”
