More than $200 billion worth of direct and indirect damage has been done to Iranian towns since the beginning of the war with Iraq in September 1980, according to an Iranian official.

The Islamic Republic newspaper Wednesday quoted the supervisor of reconstruction of war-damaged areas, Hassan Akhundi, as saying that 118,834 houses in 51 towns and 3,091 villages have been destroyed in the war.

The government has spent about $3 billion on reconstruction, including building 82,000 houses, he added.
