The City Council approved plans for a 5.5-acre expansion of Clover Park, located at 25th Street and Ocean Park Boulevard next to Santa Monica Airport.
The project will include a soccer field, two softball fields, the extension of a jogging path, a children’s play lot, an airport observation platform and picnic areas.
City Manager John Jalili said the initial cost estimates for the work have increased from $400,000 to $716,520 because of changes recommended by residents during public hearings.
Councilman James P. Conn said that he is concerned because the design calls for a chain link fence between the park and the airport and does not address noise produced by airplanes. The council voted to direct the staff to consider placing a noise barrier between the park and the airport.
The council also approved $9,200 to redesign an existing play lot in the park to make it accessible to the handicapped.
