Kings Defeat Jets in Fight-Filled Game

Right wing Dave Taylor tipped in a shot by Marcel Dionne with 7:45 left in the third period Thursday night to lead the Kings to a 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets in a fight-filled National Hockey League exhibition game before 5,970 fans at the Forum.

It was the third straight win for the Kings (3-5-0), who end their exhibition season Saturday night at the Forum against Calgary. Winnipeg is 4-2-1.

There were four fights in the first two periods.

Taylor squared off against Jet center Ron Wilson at center ice just 5 minutes 4 seconds into the game. Taylor got a pair of two-minute penalties for high sticking and roughing, and he also got five minutes for fighting. Wilson got just five minutes.

Jet defenseman Robert Picard beat up on King left wing Phil Sykes with 11:33 left in the first period. And King rookie Lyle Phair and the Jets’ Dave Silk fought it out with 3:58 left in the first period.

Dave (Tiger) Williams, the Kings’ version of Rambo, was kicked out of the game with 4:38 left in the second period after he got a game misconduct when he stepped into a little fight between teammate Doug Smith and the Jets’ Dave Silk. Smith and Silk got two minutes each for roughing.

The score was tied at 3-3 after the second period.

Brian MacLellan and Jim Fox scored first-period goals for the Kings, and Dionne added a second-period power-play goal. Defenseman Mark Hardy had three assists and center Bernie Nicholls two assists.

Center Murray Eaves, right wing Paul MacLean and center Dale Hawerchuk scored the Jet goals.

King Notes Five Kings were named to the All-Star ballot--centers Marcel Dionne and Bernie Nicholls, right wing Dave Taylor, defenseman Mark Hardy and goalie Bob Janecyk. This is the first year that fans will select the team. Ballots will be available at all NHL arenas and in The Sporting News, Sport magazine and the United Airlines in-flight magazine. The game will be played Feb. 4 at Hartford, Conn. . . . The Kings will hold an open practice Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at the Forum.
