Western Airlines to Renew Terminal Facilities at LAX

Western Airlines has announced a $70-million, three-year expansion of its terminal facilities at Los Angeles International Airport.

Gensler & Associates/Architects, Los Angeles, will design the project--the last major terminal to be renovated at the airport--with Daniel Mann Johnson & Mendenhall, Los Angeles, serving as engineering and construction management consultants. Thompson Crenshaw, Los Angeles, will be airport planning consultants on the project, scheduled for completion in October, 1988.

The new terminal will provide for direct, same-level curb-to-aircraft passenger flow, enlarged waiting rooms, handicapped facilities, enclosed jetways at every gate and an automated baggage system, according to Robin H. Wilson, Western’s president. The project will include 130,000 square feet of additional space and remodeling of 100,000 square feet of existing facilities.

A new two-story connector building is planned to link the existing passenger satellite to the ticketing building and the second level roadway; the existing satellite will be remodeled.
