VET Q & A : Animal Acupuncture

Share

Q : I’ve heard about acupuncture for animals. Is this new and what illnesses are treated with it? A: The Chinese developed acupuncture treatments for animals at the same time they started treating people with it. They used it mainly for livestock, but all domestic animals can be treated with acupuncture. We have been treating cats and dogs with acupuncture at our clinic for four years. We use a multi-pronged attack on disease. The first step is an accurate diagnosis; only then is a treatment plan formulated. This may include diet, medicines, surgery and acupuncture. I don’t think acupuncture is the solution to all problems and may not be beneficial in certain cases. If your pet has a chronic health problem--especially one that has pain as a major symptom--consult your veterinarian or call the office of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Assn., (213) 723-1746, for the name of a veterinarian practicing acupuncture in your area.
