Green Doubtful for Game With Stanford

With split end Mike Sherrard out with a broken collarbone, UCLA is facing the prospect of playing football at Stanford Saturday without its top two offensive players. Tailback Gaston Green is still recovering from a knee injury that has caused him to miss the last three games.

“I think it’s fair to say that they are our top two players,” UCLA Coach Terry Donahue said. “Gaston has only played in two games and he’s still our leading rusher, and Mike Sherrard is the leading receiver in the history of the school in both receptions and yardage.

“That’s the bad news. The good news is that of all the positions on the team, those are the two positions that can best absorb those losses. The other guys in those positions have come through very nicely.”

In the absence of Green, sophomore James Primus and freshman Eric Ball have teamed up to make the UCLA running game No. 1 in the Pacific 10.

Willie (Flipper) Anderson will move up to replace Sherrard at split end. Anderson has caught two passes for the Bruins--a 25-yarder at Tennessee for a touchdown and a 54-yarder against Arizona State for a touchdown.

Despite having a good, young backup player, Donahue was not minimizing the loss of the school’s top receiver. “The loss of Mike Sherrard is very critical, very severe,” Donahue said.

It was assumed that Sherrard would miss the rest of the regular season, but Donahue said Monday that Sherrard may be back for the USC game Nov. 23.

Green, who is trying to come back after suffering strained ligaments in his knee, is still considered doubtful for this week.
