A Union Pacific train conductor was seriously wounded Sunday when someone fired a shot through the window of the caboose on his train as it was traveling through the nearby town of Palermo.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Department said Alfred Fonseca, 40, of Stockton, was hit in the back by one shot as the train was traveling south through Palermo at about 2:30 p.m.

Officials at Oroville Hospital said Fonseca was in stable condition Sunday evening.

The Sheriff’s Department said no one had been arrested by Sunday evening, but the investigation was continuing.
