Armed Man Shot by Deputy
An armed man who threatened a couple outside a West Hollywood nightspot and then pointed his gun at sheriff’s deputies was shot and critically wounded by a deputy early today, authorities said. Walter Gutierrez, 37, was reported in critical but stable condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after the 1 a.m. confrontation outside Carlos and Charlie’s, 8240 Sunset Blvd.
A Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Gutierrez accosted the couple outside the restaurant and, after a shoving match, pointed a gun at them. When Deputies William Weiss and Howard Peltz approached and ordered Gutierrez to drop his weapon, Gutierrez pointed the gun at them, the spokeswoman said. Weiss opened fire, striking Gutierrez several times. Gutierrez was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
