Calling Yosemite National Park “a beautiful place full of the joys of nature,” the National Park Service’s regional director vowed to keep the park from being degraded. “There have been numerous public suggestions that Yosemite is in danger,” Howard Chapman told a congressional hearing on the park’s future. “It is not,” he added. “And we of the National Park Service, with your assistance, will assure that it never will be.” Chapman said the shortcomings of the park’s administration often are emphasized at the expense of successes. The hearing was held at Yosemite by the House Interior subcommittee on national parks and recreation. Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Bruce Vento (D-Minn.), during a tour of the park, called the granite vistas “spectacular. But it (the park) obviously needs a lot of attention.” Vento added that he sees “a lot of potential. Now it comes to us to preserve all this.”
