Seventh Victory: A Super Defense, Punchless Offense

Share

While the offense still shows few signs of life, the Rams continue to win because of their defense. Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium was another example of the continuing trend. Los Angeles recorded six interceptions off Todd Blackledge in its 16-0 victory over the Chiefs. Right cornerback LeRoy Irvin picked off two Blackledge passes to lead the Rams. Left cornerback Gary Green, strong safety Nolan Cromwell, free safety Johnnie Johnson and linebacker Mike Wilcher each had one. Blackledge was playing in place of Bill Kenney, who missed the game because of knee, ankle and back injuries suffered in last week’s loss to the San Diego Chargers. The Rams have allowed a league-low 89 points while compiling their 7-0 record, one of only two perfect marks in the National Football League. It was Los Angeles’ first shutout since its 9-0 win over Tampa Bay in the 1979 NFC Championship game and the third time the Rams had held an opponent without a touchdown this season. Los Angeles’ offense hasn’t been nearly as dazzling. Running back Eric Dickerson, who rushed for an NFL record 2,105 yards last season, continued to struggle, gaining 68 yards on 26 carries against the Chiefs.
