New York Knick rookie Patrick Ewing suffered a hyperextended and bruised left elbow in a fight with Indiana’s Steve Stipanovich in the third quarter of Saturday night’s 121-109 Knicks’ victory over the Pacers at Madison Square Garden.
Ewing was left behind with his arm in a sling when the team departed for Toledo, Ohio, and its final exhibition game Sunday night against the Detroit Pistons. But he is expected to be ready for the Knicks’ regular-season opener against Philadelphia next Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
Both Ewing and Stipanovich were ejected from the game. It was Ewing’s fourth scuffle of the exhibition season and his second ejection.
Television replays showed Ewing threw an elbow into Stipanovich’s face. Later, Stipanovich grabbed Ewing around the neck from behind, tossed him to the floor face-down and jumped on him.
Both benches emptied, and the two players were restrained from going after each other.
