Keith Gaffaney Dies; LAPD Officer, Lobbyist
Keith Gaffaney, one of four brothers to serve simultaneously with the Los Angeles Police Department and a former president of the National Rifle Assn., has died.
He was 71 and suffered an apparent heart attack last Saturday in Sacramento where he was working as a lobbyist for the California Wildlife Federation.
Gaffaney, who retired from the LAPD as a sergeant in 1966, managed the department’s academy in Elysian Park and the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club. He had joined the department in 1936, the third of four brothers to sign up.
After retirement, he headed the NRA from 1981 to 1983 and also served as president of the California Rifle and Pistol Assn. At his death he was head of United Sportsmen of California.
His survivors include his wife, Ruth; a son, Dennis; two grandchildren, and brother, Kenneth, who also retired from the police force in 1966.
A funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. today at Loma Vista Memorial Park, Fullerton.
