A FORMER DENTIST EM-BRACES A NEW CAREER

More on “Enemy Mine”: Word has been leaking out about the Dracs, the film’s alien creatures, and the plot.

It’s real strange: Lou Gossett plays a Drac space pilot who gives birth (!!????) to a baby Drac, dying in the process of dracbirth. His foe, Earthman Dennis Quaid, undertakes to raise the little Drac but space marauders snatch the kid and enslave it. Quaid must rescue it.

Reports have it that the majority of Dracs are played by black actors to underscore the racial allegory. But what do the Dracs look like?

The designs “started out (under initial director Richard Loncraine) as thin, elegant, very Egyptian-looking,” said a source close to the production. “The head was conical-shaped with membranes down the side.” Under current director Wolfgang Petersen, designs were revamped and “ended up looking very monstrous. It looks more reptilian and dinosaurlike, with horns and spikes . . . like a big, ugly horned toad.”
