Bob Scheffing, Former Baseball Manager, Dies

Bob Scheffing, a former major league player, manager and general manager, died Saturday at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix. He was 72.

Scheffing was a former general manager of the New York Mets, and a field manager with the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. He was named Manager of the Year in the American League in 1961.

Active in baseball for 51 years, Scheffing, a catcher, began his big league career in 1941 as a catcher for the Cubs. He also played briefly with the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He managed Los Angeles in the Pacific Coast League in 1956, the Cubs from 1957-1959 and the Tigers from 1961 through part of 1963.

Scheffing joined the New York Mets’ organization in 1965, becoming a general manager from 1970-1975, and then a special consultant. He also was president of the Baseball Players Assn.

The funeral Mass will be said Wednesday in Phoenix.
