Santa Ana : City Honors Businesses for Youth-Hiring Effort

Share

Businesses that employed about 450 local youths last summer were saluted by city officials Friday for their participation in the city’s Youth Employment and Training Program.

The program targets children of low-income families who receive jobs and training from the firms in exchange for federal tax credits. The youths, between the ages of 14 and 21, are paid minimum wages and work in a variety of jobs, including telephone operators and clerical assistants.

About 100 businesses participated, including Farmers Insurance Group, which employed 34 people who assisted in writing auto and medical insurance policies, and Cox Hobbies, a firm that manufactures model airplanes. The program, from June to August each year, is subsidized with federal funds.
