Fullback Rick Fenney bulled over for three touchdowns and gained 114 yards in 23 carries as the Washington Huskies shut out Stanford, 34-0, Saturday at Seattle to move into a tie for first place in the Pacific 10 race.

The Huskies’ first shutout and their most impressive performance of 1985 gave them a 4-1 record in the Pac-10 and a share of first place with UCLA, which was idle. The Huskies are 5-3 overall.

Fenney, a 6-foot-3, 242-pound junior who has been beset by injuries most of the season, scored on runs of 13, 7 and 8 yards. He suffered a pulled hamstring in his left leg after scoring on his 8-yard run that made the score 24-0 with 2:53 left in the third quarter and did not return.

Tony Covington, Fenney’s backup, scored on a two-yard run and Jeff Jaeger kicked field goals of 24 and 35 yards.

It was the first time Stanford had been shut out in eight seasons. Washington intercepted Cardinal quarterback John Paye four times and held the talented junior to just 96 yards passing. Paye, who entered the game as the Pac-10’s leading passer and ranked eighth nationally in total offense with an average of 265.3 yards per game, completed 18 of 30 passes.

Stanford’s David Sweeney missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt in the second quarter.

The last time Stanford was shut out was Nov. 5, 1977 against USC at the Coliseum.

Stanford fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10.

Washington quarterback Hugh Millen completed 11 of 21 passes for 145 yards.

Kicker Jeff Jaeger kicked two field goals to tie Chuck Nelson for the Washington school record of 59. The Huskies rolled up 369 yards in total offense, while holding Stanford to 250.
