Record $8,971,617 Is Wagered at Oak Tree

A total of $8,971,617--the most in a single day in Oak Tree history--was wagered at Santa Anita Saturday on a 15-race program that included the simulcasting of the seven Breeders’ Cup races from Aqueduct in New York.

The previous high at Oak Tree was $7,569,753, on Oct. 31, 1982, when John Henry won his third straight Oak Tree Invitational.

The crowd of 41,492 wagered a total of $3,453,605 on the Breeders’ Cup races alone. Los Alamitos in Orange County handled $390,020 on the seven races.

Santa Anita was one of 36 outlets outside New York, most of them race tracks, accepting wagers on the $10-million Breeders’ Cup card. The handle at the Arcadia track was the highest at any of the simulcast locations.

The third Breeders’ Cup is scheduled to be run as part of the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita on Nov. 1, 1986.

In Oak Tree’s featured race Saturday, Snow Chief, ridden by Alex Solis, won the $108,800 B.J. Ridder Stakes for 2-year-olds by a head.

The win, Snow Chief’s third stakes victory since June, strengthened his claim as the top California-bred juvenile colt.

Snow Chief was timed in 1:36 2/5 and paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10.
