Mattel said Thomas J. Kalinske has been named president of the company and has joined Chairman Arthur S. Spear in the company’s office of chief executive.

Kalinske, who had been president of the Hawthorne-based company’s Mattel U.S.A. division, succeeds Glenn A. Hastings.

Hastings, 58, who decided not to continue as president and member of the office of the chief executive because of health reasons, will remain as a member of the board of directors and assume the new position of vice chairman.

In making the announcement, Spear said: “We understand and deeply regret that Hastings has been obliged, for personal reasons, not to continue as president. . . . We are pleased that he will continue to serve Mattel as vice chairman and a member of the board of directors and are extremely grateful for his inspirational leadership and many contributions to the success of the company.”
