The Santa Cruz Boys Club, which was ordered to admit girls by the state Supreme Court two weeks ago, is in danger of being shut down because its benefactor says she wants the $1.5 million endowment used specifically for boys. In a letter to the Boys Clubs of America’s national headquarters, Ruth Mallery, 81, said the people who sued to force the change should now be required to finance it. The suit was brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and other lawyers on behalf of three girls who were denied admission. Mallery is asking the national organization to use the endowment for a club that benefits only boys. Betty Elward, president of the Santa Cruz club’s board of directors, said the club will be forced to close Jan. 1, until additional funding is found.
