Iranian Singer Gets 3 Years, 80 Lashes
A well-known Iranian singer found in the company of a drunken womman was sentenced to flogging in public, three years in prison and exile, a Tehran newspaper, Jamhuri Islami, said Tuesday.
An Islamic court sentenced Javad Yasari to 80 lashes after he was found at a private party in the company of a reportedly inebriated Mariam Afjeyi, who received a two-year term.
The story did not say what offenses they were charged with; however, Yasari was one of Iran’s top singers during the reign of the late Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. Tehran residents described the sentence as a campaign against musicians.
