NCR Reports Layoffs of 100 Area Workers
Citing a restructuring and a decrease in making its own computer peripherals, NCR Corp. officials said Tuesday that it laid off 100 employees last week, or about 5% of its 2,000-member work force in San Diego County.
As part of the restructuring, NCR will leave its 75,000-square-foot building in the Torrey Pines Science Park in the next six months and relocate the research and development as well as the computer manufacturing to two other NCR plants in Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Ranch.
“We buy more peripherals on the outside; we don’t do all the development work internally as we did in the past,” said Gus Sipkes, general manager of NCR’s Rancho Bernardo plant.
In his 18 months on the job, Sipkes said he has “restructured (the organization) to be more effective.”
About 70 people were laid off in the Rancho Bernardo plant, he said, while 30 workers were let go in the Torrey Pines and Scripps Ranch facilities.
Each NCR plant is its own profit center, said Sipkes. He declined to reveal the total revenues of NCR’s San Diego County operations. NCR, based in Dayton, Ohio, last year reported $4.1 billion in revenue and $342.6 million in net income, up 9% and 19%, respectively.
